Values = Moral Compass
Values are to the rules and rituals of religion what algebra is to arithmetic in mathematics. Rules and rituals are localized spatially, and temporally i.e., specific in their utility to the time and place of their creation, whereas having a sense of universal values allows one to find the right moral direction even when navigating through uncharted territory, e.g., the rule “Thou shall not kill.” is a circumscribed expression of the value of “nonviolence”, i.e., ahimsa.
